Limbs like lead weights, and unable to breathe, Acanthus sank to the floor where he stood, shedding frightened tears of his own.

The noise that usually accompanied a meal didn’t exist, and the attendance was sparse. Tables were so very empty that Acanthus wanted to throw up. Some boys rocked back and forth, yanking at their braids in candid shows of nerves. Many picked at their meal. Others just stared at it, and did not eat at all.

Missing four of their helpers, Michaels and Rhys had set out mostly fruit and curried rice. The kitchen boys weren’t the only ones missing. Noelani Medina wandered, hand clutching at his braid bells. His faint, drifting voice asking no one in particular if they’d seen his brother. Or his Promise.

A few boys scattered among the many long tables, crying softly. Michaels was in the kitchen, slamming pots and pans around extra hard as he washed them.

Acanthus gave Edward a sidelong glance, quickly dropping his attention back to his cut pineapple. Edward was shaking. His Promise could barely get spoonfuls of curried rice into his mouth because of his clenched jaw. Without looking up again, Acanthus calculated. With Minos gone, they were sixty-five. Now they were down to forty-one. Any boy who had not attended at least one class offered by the adults had disappeared.

Why? Why had the adults done this?

Acanthus forced down a few bites of carrot. He had to keep up his strength—it was past time to find a use for the hair he’d collected.
